Effects of Bowen and the “Healing Crisis”

The effects of Bowen and the “healing crisis”:  We are all individuals and, therefore, we will all respond to Bowen in different ways.  After a Bowen treatment, you may feel more mobility and less pain straight away.  However, it is more common to leave the treatment with the same symptoms you came in with.  During the course of the following week your body will continue to process the Bowen moves.  During this time: the body may try to process latent illnesses, old adhesions may work themselves loose, muscle and nervous tension may get released, and detoxification may occur. During the first few days after your treatment you may experience a “healing crisis” (where the body releases a mass of toxins in one go), which can result in: older or latent injuries temporarily flaring up, mild flu-like symptoms such as a slight headache, runny nose or low-grade fever, digestive changes, feeling stiff all over, and tiredness. These detox symptoms are all perfectly normal.  Drinking more water helps to ease these effects.  The body may continue to release toxins, muscle and nerve tension for up to 7 -10 days after your treatment.  Therefore, your next Bowen treatment is not normally scheduled before […]

Arthritis

Bowenwork is a relaxing holistic treatment which can help to reduce the pain and aches in your joints caused by arthritis.  Bowen works by applying rolling movements with finger and thumbs at precise points on the body.  It is performed on muscles, ligaments and soft tissue using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that person.  No hard manipulation or force is needed or used.  Bowen Therapy is not forcing the body to change, but asking the body to recognize the treatment and make the make the improvements accordingly. Using the Bowenwork, Bowen therapists aim to release stress and tension from deep inside the body, encouraging the body to restore its natural hormonal and physiological balance.  This may help with reducing the pain, aches and inflammation of joints due to arthritis. People normally find that Bowen Therapy is a gentle and relaxing experience.  The sessions generally last around 30 – 60 minutes.  The amount of sessions you may have to undergo will depend on the severity of your arthritis and the pain you are experience as a result of the condition.

TMJ Dysfunction, Trigeminal Neuralgia

Bowenwork is an excellent treatment choice for problems of the TMJ as it effectively relieves spasm and inflammation in the related muscles, tendons and nerves that are a response to stress, injury or misalignment.  It corrects chronic joint misalignments by allowing the body to let go of stuck patterns of tension.  On average, chronic TMJ sufferers start feeling relief in 2 sessions and usually see their problems resolved within 5 sessions. A research project on the application of Bowen Therapy on TMJ abnormality was started in Durango, Colorado by Dr. John Bauman, DDS.  Assessment of masseter tension by bio-feedback, measurement of bite and subjective symptoms were compared before and after treatment.  Immediately after the first treatment a third of the clients felt dramatic relief in some of their symptoms and 20 out of the 22 clients showed significant improvement on the post biofeedback assessment.  http://www.naturalisllc.com/blog/2013/7/9/research-demonstrates-effectiveness-of-the-bowen-technique

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is difficult to treat successfully because it seems to have so many different causes.  However, Bowenwork practitioners have seen significant improvements in a number of clients who have mild and intermittent to severe and long-standing tinnitus. Bowen is very helpful in relaxing muscle tensions which, if they are tight in the shoulder and neck area, can cause a great deal of strain around the ears and connecting tissues.  This is likely to affect the alignment of the head and jaw, as well as the circulation and drainage in the area, making a person’s condition worse.  Because Bowen sessions are very relaxing, this can have a positive effect in reducing stress and anxiety levels.  As the symptoms of tinnitus are worse when a person is anxious, tired, worried or stressed, anything that can help with relaxation is thought to be beneficial.

Sinusitis

Much success has been achieved by treating longstanding sinusitis with Bowen.  In one case, a woman who had suffered from chronic sinusitis for 14 years, had had four operations with the last one making matters much worse.  After a course of Bowen treatment the condition completely cleared and she has remained clear without any further treatment for some 15 months. In a similar case, infection of the right side of the sinus had continued for over a year and an operation had been scheduled.  Within a short time after commencing Bowen, the infection stopped and the sinuses cleared soon after.

Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is a general term that is used to indicate functional disturbances and/or pathological changes in the peripheral nervous system.  There are believed to be in excess of one hundred different causes of peripheral neuropathy and, in many who are diagnosed with this, doctors have not been able to determine the underlying cause.  When the cause is known, it includes things such as diabetes mellitus, HIV, nutritional deficiency, and neurotoxic effects resulting from certain prescribed treatments or therapies. The symptoms of peripheral neuropathy often affect the arms and legs and depending on the type of neuropathy, a person may have muscle weakness, paralysis or chronic neuropathic pain which would include things like numbness, sensory disturbance, pins and needles, burning sensations etc. Although Bowenwork is primarily thought of as a treatment for musculoskeletal problems, the effects of Bowen go way beyond just treating muscles in spasm and affect other levels of the body’s systems.  It also seems to open up neural pathways that have been closed down by a pain response and/or inflammation.  People frequently report that symptoms such as tingling or numbness diminish or disappear.  Weakness in the limbs and/or loss of position sense are also diminished or resolved, at least […]

Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder that affects the nervous system.  It results in the loss of various brain cells and a decrease in dopamine, a chemical in the brain that helps the muscles function. Bowenwork is a type of physical manipulation and is applied at precise points in the body.  The technique is used to stimulate the nerve pathways and tissues.  Those who have Parkinson’s disease suffer from decrease in the ability to move.  The joints are affected and the muscles become stiff.  This is because the fascia and muscles are affected due to increase in stress hormones.  Bowen helps by relaxing the nerves and muscles of the patient. Those with Parkinson’s disease can benefit from Bowen because it not only helps with muscle tension, but relaxes the mind as well.  This is beneficial for anxiety and depression.  Patients who have Parkinson’s disease face problems with hand tremors, bad posture, poor balance, insomnia and fatigue; all these symptoms can be reduced through the Bowen technique. However, Bowen therapy is not a cure, nor an alternative to medicine.  In fact, it is a complementary method that helps by reducing the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

ADHD

Bowen Therapy is well-suited for all children, including those with ADHD, for many reasons.  It can be done with very gentle pressure and still be effective.  It is done with clothing on, making them feel more comfortable.  Children are generally more active, thus helping the energetics of the therapy to work better and faster.  They do not have ideas about whether a treatment is going to work or not.  Their minds don’t really go there.  So, they tend to be more receptive than adults.  Adults can be rather skeptical, especially if they have tried everything and to no avail. In a typical Bowen session, there are required pauses between some of the procedures within a session.  But with children, the breaks are not needed because they process the nerve stimulation much more quickly, so the therapy session is over in less than half the time of an adult’s session. Children say that they are able to concentrate at school better and feel less anxious.  Parents see a difference in their attitudes in that the children are easier to be with and are much more cooperative.

Anxiety and Stress

We often live our lives at a much faster and more stressful pace than our body is designed to cope with.  Stress has a massive physical impact on the body, though we may often be unaware of its effects.  The long-term effects of stress can be devastating.  It contributes to health problems such as high blood pressure, headaches, hormone imbalance, digestive problems and all kinds of muscular aches and pains. Bowenwork has been clinically proven to significantly reduce anxiety, tension and fatigue.  Bowen releases muscular tension and helps the body return to the ‘parasympathetic’ nervous system in which it can rest and heal itself.  Through gentle movements over muscles and nerves the Bowen practitioner will target the key areas to release tension and anxiety and help get you back to you best

Headaches including Tension and Migraine

Headaches and migraines can be horribly painful and affect huge numbers of people.  There is a lot that can be done to help headaches using Bowen.  This therapy can gradually ease the pain caused by migraines and other forms of headaches, and in some cases can help eliminate them entirely. Migraine and other types of headaches are often hormone-related.  They can also be caused by inflammation in the sinuses or retained tension in the neck and shoulders.  Stress, dehydration and diet can all play a role.  Bowen therapy helps relax the body and release retained tension.  It helps the body attain its optimum hormonal and metabolic balance.  With regular Bowen sessions you should see a marked improvement in your headaches. London-based Bowen practitioner, Nikke Ariff, completed the Bowen therapy Migraine Research Program which studied the efficacy of treating migraine headaches.  The 39 migraine volunteers consisted of 37 women and 2 men.  Thirteen of them had been suffering from migraines for 1-15 years; seventeen of them had been having migraines for 16-30 years; and nine had migraines for over 30 years.  In all, 31 participants experienced a positive result, representing 79.5% of the total group.  At the end of the program, […]
